The Measure of Transience Abacus Tzompantli reinterprets one of humanity’s oldest calculating tools, transforming the abacus from a mathematical device into a visual meditation on time, memory, and mortality. In the traditional abacus, the movement of the beads serves to measure concrete quantities. In this work, counting loses its numerical function to become a symbolic gesture: each movement is no longer an arithmetic operation, but an act of reflection that marks the passage of time and the inevitability of existence.

The work connects two seemingly distant worlds: Abacus: A symbol of rational logic, order, and precision. Tzompantli: The Mesoamerican ceremonial structure used to display skulls. Without literally reproducing these structures, the work borrows their symbolic power, transforming the repetitive sequence of the abacus into a contemporary reflection on accumulation, memory, and the fragility of life.

Abacus Tzompantli presents the act of counting as a true ritual of memory: Time Incarnate: It invites the viewer to experience time not as an abstract sequence of numbers, but as a finite and deeply human experience.
